Salt Water is a series of watercolour paintings created with pacific ocean salt water from the wild and rugged shores of Haida Gwaii, Canada’s most remote archipelagos.
As a watercolour artist, my focus is deeply embedded in the process of layering pigments on paper. This specific series is about shifting focus to include the water within each painting as an intimate part of the creative process. A mindful collaboration with the elements, a practice of painting with nature as part of nature and honouring that which has been here all along.
The beginning of each painting starts with the harvest of ocean water...the element serving as a catalyst for all that is to become. Salt Water then finds new purpose mixing with pigments on paper, a true connection to place and to the ocean that sustains us all. Each painting in this collection was painted plein air in Haida Gwaii with salt water from nearby natural sources bringing forth a finished product that is raw, weathered, imperfect, evolving, alive… Water is life, and I hope that this energy of intention may shine through. I respectfully acknowledge that this body of work was inspired and created on the unceded land of the Haida people.
